From the start of a colleagues shift and once they sign in to the Guard Management System using the Patrol Logger app, the timer starts, requiring each member of carry out an action on the software within a set period. The action taken can be anything from tapping a patrol tag on site to raising an incident or creating a note. Once the system has received any communication, it takes this as a proof of life and the timer is reset. The length of time given between checks is usually set at 60 minutes, but can be overridden for each site to factor in the site's individual risk assessment & threat level.

When a guard misses a check-in, the first point of action is to send them a reminder; this is intentionally sent to their personal phone, and includes an innocuous question, defaulting to asking "what's the weather like where you are?" - on nearly all occasions, this is sufficient to resolve the situation as it reminds the guard that they've missed a check and triggers them to take action. If there's no response within a further 5 minute window, the alert is raised with not only the guard's line manager and their line manager, but an alert is sent to all staff who are logged in within the same region which sends everyone contact and location information for the unresponsive guard.

Staff check-in information can be viewed a glance from the Guard Management System and presents a colour coded display that can be read at a glance.

The great thing about the system is that it's completely automated and only requires human intervention when there's a problem; freeing up control room resource to concentrate on other tasks.

Working within the security sector there are going to be times that it's necessary to request assistance and to do so in a discrete way. The simple act of tapping a button on the Patrol Logger app is all that it takes to raise the alarm; once confirmed, an alert is sent through to the same contacts as a reactive alert allowing for the company's escalation protocol to be followed.
